After posting their first conference win against Sonoma State on Thursday of last week, the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team fell 80-65 to Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.

The Cal Poly women also fell to San Marcos on Saturday, 62-56.

Freshman Brandon Bento-Jackson had a big game for the men’s team and finished with 11 points off the bench.

The former Arcata Tiger shot 4 of 5 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from downtown.

Kareem Clark scored a team-high 12 points in the loss and also had nine rebounds, while teammates Sage Wayans and Rob Diaz III each scored 10 points.

With the loss, the Jacks dropped to 1-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 4-14 on the season.

San Marcos improved to 7-6 and 8-11.

The Humboldt women, meanwhile, got off to fast start and outscored the visitors in each of the opening two quarters to lead 36-29 at the interval.

However, the visitors responded in the second half and pulled away late after outscoring the Jacks 19-11 in the fourth quarter.

Emilia Long scored a game-high 23 points for Humboldt and also had nine rebounds.

The conference-leading Cougars improved to 11-2 in the CCAA (14-4 overall) and are two wins clear of the chasing pack.

The Humboldt women dropped to 6-7 in conference and 8-9 overall.

They remain in the chase for the CCAA tournament with just one win separating the fourth through 10th teams in a competitive conference.

The Jacks are one of five teams with a 6-7 conference mark.

Both Humboldt teams will play two more home games this week, with San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay visiting Lumberjack Arena on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
