Fortuna boys beat Las Plumas, get set for key Big 5 finale

The Fortuna Huskies got off to a fast start in a non-league boys basketball game at Las Plumas on Monday and ran out to a comfortable 57-43 win.

The Huskies, who improved to 15-9 on the season, led 22-2 after the opening quarter.

Despite going deep to their bench in the second quarter, the Fortuna continued to pull away, stretching the lead to 23 before halftime, and there was no way back for the home team after that.

Kobe Spaulding continued his comeback from a recent injury with a big night for Fortuna and finished with a game-high 18 points.

The sophomore guard added nine rebounds.

Another Fortuna player who recently came back from injury, Jake Houseworth, also had a big game and finished with nine points ands seven rebounds, while Jace Barsanti added seven points and the ever-dangerous Russell Pascascio finished with six points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

Leading scorer Alfonso Medina took just one shot all night but did have a team-best eight assists.

Kallen Barrote added five points, six rebounds and three assists, while Hunter Reback had four points, and Bryson Gillam and Trent McsGrath each hit a 3-pointer

The win was the second straight for the Huskies who return to league play when they host Del Norte on Wednesday night.

The Huskies are 3-4 in the Big 5 and remain in the chase for a Dick Niclai tournament berth.

Fortuna has one conference game remaining and trails Eureka (3-3) by half a game for the third and final tournament spot.

The Loggers close out conference play with games at Arcata on Wednesday and at McKinleyville on Friday.
