Three local varsity teams were in action on Monday, including the St. Bernard’s boys and girls, who swept a pair of non-league games at Sonoma Academy.

The SB girls won 53-27, while the boys won 61-41, and both squads improved to 14-2.

The Fortuna girls also were in action and won a non-league showdown at Novato by a score of 39-24 and improved to 13-9.

With their win, the St. Bernard’s girls stretched their winning streak to five straight games and they have now won nine of their last 10 games.

The Crusaders are also now ranked No. 1 in North Coast Section Division 5 and No. 2 in the state.

Madelyn Shanahan scored a team-high 13 points in Monday’s win to lead a balanced offensive performance.

Laila Florvilus added 10 points, while Samantha Sundberg finished with seven points and Aliyah Vigil and Hannah Finck each chipped in five points.

The Crusaders will look to continue their good form when they play at Campolindo, a Division-3 team, on Tuesday night.

The St. Bernard’s boys, meanwhile, capped a busy few days with their win.

The Crusaders, who played four games in five days, stretched their winning streak to eight straight.

Senior Aaiden Burris was once again instrumental in the win and finished with 20 points, six assists and five rebounds as he continues his impressive senior campaign.

Rowan Cromwell also impressed in the win and added 17 points and 17 rebounds for a double-double, while Seth Dyer also had a double-double, finishing with 16 points, 10 boards and four assists.

“We had great ball movement all game long,” St. Bernard’s interim head coach Pat Shanahan said. “The boys played with pace and confidence. They continue to grow and meet the next challenge.”

The game was a good test for the Crusaders against another Division-5 team.

“Sonoma Academy is a well-coached team with some skilled players,” Shanahan said. “It was a good challenge for us and the boys stepped up.”

The SB boys are currently ranked No. 3 in NCS Division 5.

The Fortuna girls, meanwhile, won their second straight game, overcoming a slow start after the road trip south to Novato.

Kalie Chittenden scored a team-high 13 points in the 15-point victory, while teammate Emily Sauers added eight points.

The team defense paved the way to victory.

“We started slow but we were able to grind out the win,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “Our defense did a good job putting pressure eon the ball and forcing turnovers.”

The Huskies return to league play at Arcata on Friday night.

The Fortuna JV girls also played at Novato on Monday and continued to impress with a 51-15 win.

The young Huskies are now 20-1 on the season, including 4-0 in the Big 5.
