BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Loggers go to 2-0 in B5; Del Norte, Ferndale sweep

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Action from Tuesday’s game between Arcata and McKinleyville.

The Eureka Loggers continued their impressive start to the Big 5 with a big road win on Tuesday night.

The Loggers traveled to Fortuna and came away with a 56-47 victory to go to 2-0 in conference and 12-6 overall.

The win keeps pressure on conference leaders McKinleyville, which also won on Tuesday night, beating Arcata 51-34 with a statement performance.

Also in action on Tuesday, the Ferndale Wildcats swept a non-league doubleheader at home to Hayfork.

The Ferndale boys won 65-31 and improved to 4-7, while the girls won 48-20 and are now 10-3.

In Crescent City, the Del Norte boys and girls teams hosted Hoopa in non-league action.

The Del Norte girls won 48-40 to end a two-game losing streak and improved to 13-4, while the Del Norte boys ended a six-game losing skid with a 63-55 win over Hoopa.

At Fortuna, the Eureka boys kept their unbeaten start to conference play going while all but eliminating the Huskies from Big 5 contention.

Julian Goodman continued his impressive recent form with a team-high 12 points in the win, including a pair of 3-pointers.

The senior forward has been one of his team’s most consistent players in recent games and appears ready to play a pivotal role in the Loggers’ title charge this winter, both scoring and rebounding.

“His confidence continues to build,” Eureka assistant coach Andrew DeHart said. “He’s somebody who has really been stepping up.”

Elijah Estrada also was instrumental in the win and finished with 11 points, while Jahmil Rippy added 10 points, including two 3s.

Will Mooney and Trent Gerber each chipped in eight points, with Mooney draining a pair of 3s and Gerber finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

Michael Jewell also had a big game and like Goodman he continues to play a pivotal role for the team at both ends of the floor, even if it doesn’t show up in the stats.

“He’s a guy who goes unsung,” DeHart said of the junior standout. “He does all the little things and he’s a big energy guy.”

The Loggers will try to keep their perfect start to the Big 5 going when they host defending champs Arcata on Thursday night in their first home conference game.

BOYS

Ferndale 65, Hayfork 31

After losing a heartbreaker at Hoopa last week, the Ferndale boys bounced back with a big win over Hayfork.

Prescott Langer once again led the way offensively and finished with a game-high 18 points, while Thomas Fergison added 10 points and Trent Titus chipped in eight points.

According to head coach Tristen Waters, Prescott attacked the basket early and stayed aggressive the whole game.

“I must say he is such a selfless player,” Waters said of the standout sophomore. “He is doing a great job in such a huge role in his first year on varsity. Prescott is a great competitor.”

Titus also impressed his coach in his role as team playmaker.

“We are the most dangerous when Trent is passing like he was tonight,” Waters said.

Isaak Kasso added eight points in the win and teammate Wes Renner finished with seven.

The Timberjacks dropped to 8-6 with the loss.

“That was a big win for us because I feel like Hayfork is having themselves a solid season,” Waters said. “I feel as if we are catching our stride right now. We are playing more complete basketball.”

The Wildcats will try to keep the momentum going when they return to league play against South Fork at Ferndale High on Thursday night.

Del Norte 63, Hoopa 55

Michael Webster has been on a roll for the Del Norte boys in recent weeks and that continued to be the case against Hoopa.

Webster scored a team-high 20 points in Tuesday’s win on 7-of-12 shooting, while teammate Collin Tromble added 12 points and shot 5 of 6 from the floor.

Tromble also had six steals, which helped set the tone for the home team, while Lyon Rigden also finished with 12 points.

The most impressive aspect of the win, however, was how the Warriors performed down the stretch and how they responded to a pair of conference losses last week.

“We look like we have matured as a team,” head coach Cris Rice said. “We played with some poise and confidence down the stretch.”

Aidan Rice added seven points in the win, while teammate Kai Russell finished with five points.

After struggling at the free-throw line in a loss to Eureka last week, when they managed just 3 of 15 attempts, the Del Norte boy fared much better against Hoopa and drained 18 of 25 attempts.

No scoring stats were immediately available for Hoopa, which dropped to 6-7.

The Del Norte boys improved to 7-10.

GIRLS

Del Norte 48, Hoopa 40

The Del Norte girls got back to winning ways with an eight-point win over visiting Hoopa.

Anyessa Bettega, who is enjoying a big senior season with the team, scored a team-high 19 points in the win, while Jacalyn Gorbet finished with 11 points, Breann Winingham added eight points and Lauren Stutes chipped in five points.

According to head coach Dylan Nelson, it was a good team effort with contributions from a variety of different players.

Including Bettega, who hit some big baskets and “showed composure,” the coach said, as well as Winingham and Stutes, who both fought hard on the glass.

With injured leading scorer Brooklyn Carter still out, the versatile Gorbet stepped up.

“Jacalyn really adjusted to playing on the perimeter and continues to show her versatility,” Nelson said.

No scoring stats were immediately available for Hoopa, which lost for the second straight game and dropped to 8-5.
