Former Lumberjacks player and assistant coach Megan Corriea has been named the new head coach of Cal Poly Humboldt softball, the university announced on Friday.
Corriea replaces longtime head coach Shelli Sarchett, who was let go late last year for undisclosed reasons.
“Megan Corriea is an outstanding fit for our university, athletic department, and community and we are excited to welcome her back to Arcata,” Humboldt Athletics Director Dr. Nick Pettit said in a press release announcing the hiring.
“As a former Lumberjack player and coach, Megan understands the strong traditions of the program and is committed to academic excellence and a desire to create a championship culture and experience for our student-athletes, which made her the clear choice for Cal Poly Humboldt.”
Corriea, who played for the Jacks under legendary head coach Frank Cheek for two seasons in the early 2000s, brings two decades of coaching experience to the position.
She most recently served as the head coach at Southwestern Oregon Community College , a position she held since 2007.
During her time in Coos Bay, Corriea posted a record of 486-207.
“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to coach at Humboldt,” Corriea said in the press release. “Being an alumni I have a great deal of pride for the softball program and the university.
“I hope that I can continue and add to the strong tradition of the softball program. It was a major part of my life and I take great pride in being able to give back.”
Last year, Corriea led Southwestern Oregon to the program’s first-ever Northwest Athletic Conference Elite 8 championship, finishing with a record of 47-3.
Corriea and her staff were voted the conference Coach/Coaching Staff of the Year by the conference coaches.
“I will always be grateful for my time at Southwestern Oregon CC and I will never forget all the people who have helped me grow while in Coos Bay,” she added. “It was not an easy decision to leave such a great group of young women, but I know they will be in good hands with Coach Benoit at SWOCC. I look forward to the next chapter in my coaching career and making an impact at Cal Poly Humboldt.”
Prior to her time with the Lakers at SWOCC, Corriea was an assistant coach for Cal Poly Humboldt (then Humboldt State) from August 2001 to May 2003, while working with Cheek.
The Lumberjacks were Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions both seasons.
During her two years playing for the Lumberjacks, the talented center fielder was twice selected to the All-West Region Tournament Team and was a member of the 2001 team that placed third in the nation.
Megan graduated from Humboldt with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2001.
She also earned a master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2012.
