South Fork boys top Averroes in Gene Cotter Memorial final

The South Fork Cubs won their second tournament of the season on Saturday, beating Averroes 44-35 in the final of their own Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament.

The victory lifts the two-time defending Little 4 champions to 9-2 on the season.

And they appear to be getting stronger.

Senior standout Tommy Rotbergs had his best game yet in the victory and he did so on both sides of the ball in what was a “huge grinder of a game,” according to head coach Taylor Morrow.

Rotbergs finished with a team-high 21 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

“Tommy had an excellent game, his best yet on both ends,” Morrow said. “His energy and hustle was big.”

Teammates Trevor Hunt and Rubin Lopez each also were named to the all-tournament team.

“Trevor Hunt provided a great presence in the paint, rebounding and blow up screen and roll action,” the coach said.

Morrow added that Lopez was “a dog all night,” on his way to finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The game featured long possessions as both defenses excelled, and the Averroes players got into some early foul trouble, which benefitted the Cubs, who shot 25 free throws.

“We made them work for every point,” said Morrow, who added “I’m very proud of our team.”

The Cubs also won the Redwood Classic in Anderson Valley earlier this month.

Next up, the Cubs will host Fortuna on Tuesday night in what should be another good early-season test for them.
