Warriors win season-opening Battle at the Border tournament

The Del Norte Warriors got the new wrestling season off to an impressive start at their own Battle at the Border Tournament last weekend.

Del Norte won both the boys and girls tournaments, barely edging Eureka in the latter.

In the boys tournament, the Warriors placed first in five of the 14 weight classes and scored 205 team points, while Arcata had three first places and McKinleyville two.

The Fortuna Huskies placed second with 180 points, with Grants Pass (139.5), Arcata (117) and Eureka (105.5) rounding out the top five teams.

Del Norte’s Curtis Bartley placed first at 144 pounds and was named Outstanding Lower Weight wrestler at the tournament, while teammate Colton Schaad placed first at 190 and was named Outstanding Upper Weight wrestler.

Chulhs Bates (113), Isaac Lopez (150) and Braydan Johnson (215) each also placed first for the Warriors.

Kaidan Bell (106), Mark Bickmore (132) and Isaiah Bell (138) each placed first for Arcata, while Brandon Hillegeist (120) and Jace Tomson (157) both won their weight brackets for McKinleyville.

Fortuna’s Mason Evanow (126), Hoopa’s Kaewett Nelson (175), Eureka’s Knolin Callender (heavyweight) and Owen Hull of Grants Pass (165) rounded out the winners on the day.

Most of the H-DNL teams were back in action at the McKinleyville tournament on Saturday.

Fortuna’s Cayden Spiers was second at 106, followed by Patrick Murphy of Grants Pass in third.

Fortuna’s Jordan Jacobs placed second at 113, followed by Willits’ Logan Bercume in third.

Del Norte’s Alex Osborne placed second at 120, followed by Fortuna’s Elias Golder in third.

Jacob Livingston was second at 126, followed by Eureka’s Kalvin Robbins in third.

Fortuna’s Tyson Evanow was second at 132, followed by Eureka’s Xinxai Lee in third.

At 138, Fortuna’s Jacob August placed second, followed by Del Norte’s Remington Escobedo in third.

At 144, Mark Astry of Grants Pass was second, followed by Arcata’s Jackson Hicks in third.

At 150, Hoopa’s Santiago Moon was second, followed by Nate Lucore of Grants Pass in third.

Fortuna’s Mako Limon was second at 157, followed by Del Norte’s Soren Lewis in third.

Del Norte’s Reynaldo Martinez was second at 165, followed by McKinleyville’s Lucas Dickey in third.

Hoopa’s Donald Hostler placed second at 175, followed by Ashton Park of Grants Pass in third.

At 190, Hoopa’s Antonio Correa was second, followed by Donald Glenn of Willits in third.

At 215, Fortuna’a Kaysen Finley was second, followed by Del Norte’s Robert Reyes-Villegas in third.

And at heavyweight, Kane Lamberton of Gold Beach placed second, with Arcata’s Nathaniel Stiles in third.

In the girls tournament, Del Norte’s Micole Massey won her weight division, while teammates Channey Schaad, Carley Dotson and Aubrey Dotson each placed second.
