The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s basketball will try to continue its winning start to conference play this week, with road games at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday and at Sonoma State on Saturday.
The Lumberjacks have won three straight games, including two straight in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Last weekend, the Humboldt women beat Cal Poly Pomona 61-58 and Cal State San Bernardino 49-48 at Lumberjack Arena, and they are now 2-0 in conference and 4-2 on the season.
A big third quarter that saw them outscore San Bernardino 18-11 was the difference in a tight game on Saturday night.
Fresh off the soccer field, junior guard Emilia Long has impressed for the Jacks early in the basketball season.
The two-sport star from Port Angeles, Wash., who led the Humboldt women’s soccer team with eight goals and seven assists in the fall, is averaging a team-high 15.2 points through the opening five games of the basketball season.
She also has a team-best 23 assists and 23 steals.
The outstanding Long also hit a game-winning free throw against San Bernardino.
The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team, meanwhile, didn’t fare quite so well over the weekend.
The Jacks dropped their opening two conference games, also against Pomona and San Bernardino.
The Humboldt men fell 70-53 to Pomona and 65-51 to San Bernardino and are now 2-4 on the season.
Recent Arcata High graduate Brandon Bento-Jackson scored nine points against Pomona and is averaging 5.2 points a game while seeing action off the bench in all six games so far.
Emanuel Steward scored a team-high 17 points against San Bernardino.
The Cal Poly Humboldt men will try to get back on track when they travel to play San Marcos and Sonoma State this week.
The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and the men play at 7:30 p.m.

First of all, I want to congratulate the Cal Poly Humboldt Women’s basketball team and an exciting victory over Cal State San Bernardino this past Saturday. But I must raise a MAJOR concern I have after watching the game live. I ask why head coach Bento-Jackson’s husband is allowed to sit in the stands making hand motions and cleary assisting head coach Bento-Jackson coach her team from the stands. This observation did not just happen once, but numerous times throughout the entire game. Coach Bento-Jackson can be seen looking up at him several times receiving her husband’s hand communications. Hasn’t this specific program had enough turmoil with Coach Bento-Jackson and the actions of her husband. I’m not making any of this up. I ask the Athletic Staff, Athletic Director and even the Cal Poly Humboldt President to review the entire game film, which I believe is video and audio recorded from the East side of the gym. Please review specifically around 8 minutes remaining in the second period. #11 player for Cal Poly Humboldt makes a bad play. Mr. Jackson (husband) can clearly be seen motioning to Coach Bento-Jackson after the play to pull #11 out of the game by motioning to her the thumbs up several times while Bento-Jackson is looking at her husband. Within seconds, player #11 is removed from the game and never played another minute. I ask who is coaching this team? Why is Mr. Jackson allowed to act like this in public at a sporting event with his wife coaching. I feel this is direct rule violation along with unethical and unprofessional conduct, plus disrespectful to teammates and coaching staff from both represented schools. What would you think the parents of player #11 would think once they see Mr. Jackson’s auctions. There were several of us in attendance that witnessed Mr. Jackson’s behavior from the stands. Should Mr. Jackson be removed from attending future games involving Cal Poly Humboldt women’s basketball games? We will see what the CCAA decides and if any auction the Administrative staff investigates with this information.
