It was a good night for the H-DNL teams in tournament play on Thursday, with some lopsided wins for four different teams.
The Eureka girls beat Woodland 74-13 at the Gridley tournament, while Fortuna beat Woodland Christian 60-25 at the Colusa tournament and St. Bernard’s got the better of Langston Hughes 67-11 at the Cloverdale tournament.
Also in action on Thursday, Del Norte improved to 2-0 with a 53-30 win over Orland.
Closer to home, the Hoopa Warriors defeated McKinleyville 47-44 in overtime at the Arcata tournament.
Samara Gaither led Eureka with 18 points against Woodland, while teammate Isis Poteet added 16 points.
Jeralyn Miller also had a good night and added 12 points while Kaitlin Giacone finished with 11 points.
The Loggers improved to 3-1 with the win and will continue tournament play against Oroville on Friday at 4 p.m.
Fortuna junior Kalie Chittendon continued her impressive start to the new season at Colusa as the Huskies improved to 3-0.
Chittendon finished with a team-high 16 points in the win, while fellow junior Mariah Bravo added 11 points.
“The team played well against a young Woodland Christian team,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “I liked the intensity from start to finish.
“It can be challenging in a lopsided game to stay focused and play at the level we want to be at as a team.”
Seniors Allie Cox and Sabrina Aguilar-Arce each added eight points.
The Fortuna girls will continue tournament play against the tournament hosts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in what should be a much more challenging game.
The St. Bernard’s girls, meanwhile, won their season opener at the Cloverdale tournament, which they wo a year ago.
All 11 players to make the trip scored in the win, led by Laila Florvilus, who finished with 13 points.

Rihanna Fontenot added 12 points, while Aliyah Vigil and Madelyn Shanahan each chipped in eight points.
The Crusaders will play Lower Lake in the tournament semifinals on Friday night at 8 p.m.
The most exciting game of the night took place at Arcata, where the McKinleyville Panthers battled back from a 13-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
However, despite having just four players on the floor in overtime, the Warriors outscored their Big 5 opponents 9-5 in the extra period to pick up their first win of the season.
Tatum Fisher scored a team-high 14 points for the Panthers, who dropped to 0-1 on the season, while Gabby Watson finished with 11 points and Bella Turner chipped in five points.

“We just did not kill it on the boards, we did not take care of the ball, and we did not do a good job at the free throw line, all the things you need to do to win a game,” Mack head coach Jacob Cheek said. “But Hoopa came ready to play.”
The Warriors have just seven players on their roster this year but they can play and after pushing Del Norte all the way in a two-point loss last week they got their first win on Thursday.
“Those seven play like 10,” Cheek said of Hoopa. “They all play hard.”
No stats were immediately available for Hoopa.
The Panthers will try to bounce back when they play Willits on Friday at 6 p.m., while Hoopa will play Arcata at 7:30 p.m.
