By Ray Hamill — As expected, the Eureka Loggers have been handed the No. 1 seed in the Division-1 bracket for the 2023 North Coast Section girls soccer playoffs.

The Big 4 champ Eureka girls are one of five local teams to qualify for the postseason.

The top-seeded Loggers will have an opening-round bye in the six-team bracket and will play either Middletown or Arcata in next weekend’s semifinals.

In addition to Eureka and Arcata, the Fortuna girls were also included in the Division-1 field, while St. Bernard’s and Ferndale were both included in the Division-3 bracket.

The Huskies are seeded No. 2 in Division 1 and also have a bye in the opening round.

Fortuna will play either No. 3 Credo or No. 6 Upper Lake in next weekend’s quarterfinals.

The Arcata girls received the No. 5 seed and will kick off on the road at No. 4 Middletown on Wednesday.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and that will be the only midweek game featuring an H-DNL team.
The St. Bernard’s girls, meanwhile, received the No. 2 seed in their bracket after winning the Little 4 championship last week and they will play No. 3 Technology at Crusader Field on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

The Crusaders will be playing for their fourth consecutive section crown.

The Ferndale Wildcats, who pushed the Crusaders for the league title all the way to the final day of the regular season, were handed the No. 4 seed in the four-team bracket and will open on the road at No. 1 Mendocino, also on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

If St. Bernard’s and Ferndale both win their semifinals, they will face off in the championship  game on Nov. 8.

  1. D1 = 7 teams total

    D3 = 4 teams total

    this playoff set-up is like a dark farce if it were not so serious… sad situation that these fall teams do not have a more expanded playoff schedule…

    …actually, quite disgusting a display by adults in charge…
