Arcata’s Madyson Nelson missed out on a trip to the North Coast Section Division-I tournament by just one stroke after an outstanding round at Monday’s Division-II championships in Oakland.

The 2023 H-DNL champion shot a season-best 89 at the Metropolitan Golf Links to pace a contingent of 10 league golfers who qualified for the NCS tournament.

The junior standout, who won four of seven H-DNL rounds this season, was the only local golfer to shoot under 100.

St. Bernard’s Hannah Finck had the second best local round of the day after shooting a 103, followed by McKinleyville’s Neyr-res Bartoo with a round of 107.

The league champion Arcata Tigers qualified as a team and shot a 438.

Lily Cunningham had the second best round of the day for the Tigers with a 112, followed by Ash Osceola (113) and Toni Diaz (124).

A pair of Del Norte girls also made the trip.

Charley Tygart, who tied for the low score in a couple of rounds of league play this year, shot a 111, while teammate Sophia Jager was just one stroke back.

Eureka’s Ma Lopez also qualified for the NCS tournament and shot a 118 to round out the local contingent.

Alyssa Lim of James Logan won the tournament with a round of 66, which was five strokes better than anyone else.
