By Ray Hamill — Eureka senior Sequoia Ashby is building momentum ahead of the upcoming H-DNL cross country championships.

Ashby won for the third time in four league races at the Arcata Sports Complex on Wednesday, comfortably out-pacing the rest of the league by 44 seconds.

With outstanding Arcata freshman Bella DeCarli not competing this week, Ashby was the runaway winner and crossed the finish line in a time of 21 minutes, 15 seconds.

Her teammate Miriam Mende was second on the day.

It was the fifth top-three finish of the season for the consistent Eureka senior, who finished the 5K course in a time of 21:59.

The Arcata Tigers took the next two spots and six of the top 11 to take the team win.

The Arcata girls scored 25 points followed by Eureka with 37 and McKinleyville with 77.

Junior Josephine Magure led the Tigers in third, finishing in a time of 22:31, followed by senior teammate Nicole Nozawa in fourth (22:44) and Fortuna sophomore Bride Lester in fifth (22:45).

Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite, Hoopa’s Julia Jackson and Arcata’s Madison Trieu, Sonya Chisholm and Sydney Ventuleth rounded out the top 10.
