The Eureka Loggers took two of the top three spots in this week’s H-DNL cross country race, with senior Sequoia Ashby crossing the line in first place for the second straight week.

Competing on Wednesday at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course, Ashby was a comfortable winner in a time of 21 minutes, 11 seconds, outpacing the field by 29 seconds.

It was the third career league win for the impressive senior, who also placed first at McKinleyville last week and has won both H-DNL races she has competed in this fall.

Freshman Bella DeCarli also impressed on Wednesday as she continues an outstanding start to her high school career.

The Arcata runner placed second in a time of 21:40 and led the Tigers to a third team victory in three league meets this season.

A deep Arcata team had eight of the top 13 finishers on the day and scored 24 points for the team win, comfortably beating Eureka, which had 37 points.

DeCarli has not finished out of the top two in the first three H-DNL races this fall, including a victory in her high school league debut at Del Norte two weeks ago.

The top three on Wednesday were identical to a week ago, with Eureka senior Miriam Mende again placing third in a time of 22:53.

Arcata junior Josephine Maguire was fourth best on the day in a time of 24:19, followed by Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite in fifth in a time of 24:32.

Fortuna sophomore Brida Lester was sixth, with Hoopa senior Julia Jackson finishing seventh for her first career top-10 finish in an H-DNL meet.

Arcata freshman Sonya Chisholm was eighth, followed by senior teammates Emma Martin and Nicole Nozawa in ninth and 10th, respectively.

The league season continues next Wednesday at Fortuna, where the league championships will be held in early November.
