Ashby gets second league win in H-DNL season debut

Photos by Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Eureka’s Sequoia Ashby approaches the finish line on her way to winning the league race at McKinleyville on Wednesday.

Eureka senior Sequoia Ashby seems to like running in McKinleyville.

After missing last week’s league opening race in Del Norte, Ashby returned to action on Wednesday and placed first in a time of 20 minutes, 10 seconds.

It was Ashby’s second ever league win, following the victory she took at McKinleyville in 2022.

Her time was also a PR for a 5K, barely beating the time she ran at the Prefontaine Memorial Run earlier in the month by just two-tenths of a second.

However, it wasn’t enough to give the Loggers the team win, with Arcata’s depth prevailing to give the Tigers the boys and girls team victories on the day.

The Arcata girls scored 24 points, followed by Eureka (39) and McKinleyville (76).

Impressive freshman Bella DeCarli finished 51 seconds behind Ashby in second with a time of 21:01, one week after she won her first-ever H-DNL race in Del Norte.

Eureka senior Miriam Mende (21:37) and Fortuna senior Gabby Crosswhite (22:53) were the next two across the line, meaning three different schools were represented in the top four.

Fortuna also had the fifth-placed runner, with sophomore Brida Lester finishing in a time of 23:16.

Arcata had the next five runners, with freshman Zoe Cappuccio, junior Josephine Maguire, junior Madison Trieu, freshman Sonya Chisholm and senior Emma Martin finishing sixth through 10th.

Hoopa senior Julia Jackson led the Warriors in 11th.

  1. The excitement and joy in reading and seeing what these young athletes are accomplishing is exhilarating! Awesome job Arcata High and way to stay with it and work through the pain, Bella DeCarli.
