Local players feature among NCS statistical leaders

By Ray Hamill — Anyone who has watched him play this year knows Wyatt Simoni is arguably the best football player in the H-DNL.

He has been on fire all season and setting the standard on an undefeated St. Bernard’s team (4-0), and he’s doing so on both sides of the ball.

His stats are impressive, enough so that he features among the North Coast Section leaders in multiple categories.

Even more impressive, however, is that unlike many of his section peers he’s a statistical leader on both offense and defense.

The senior defensive end leads the section in sacks and is doing so by an impressive margin.

Simoni has got to the opposing quarterback 10.5 times in four games, three full sacks better than second-placed Kodi Cornelius of Casa Grande.

On offense, meanwhile, Simoni plays running back and is third in the section with 12 touchdowns, including 11 rushing TDs.

He’s also fifth in the NCS in rushing yards with 652 for an average of 163 a game and 7.16 a carry.

And he’s not the only Crusader to feature among the NCS stat leaders.

Sophomore kicker Tyler Hinrichs is third in the section in PATs after nailing 18 of his 20 attempts through the opening four games.

Of course it’s important to remember that not every team in the NCS posts stats, but those are still impressive numbers nonetheless.

Both Simoni and Hinrichs and their teammates will try to keep their fast start going when they host Ukiah at Crusader Field next weekend, before traveling to Segerstrom in Santa Ana the following weekend.

The Crusaders had a bye this week.
