Loggers continue fast start with second straight shutout win

Lorena Hernandes and Lila Ekholdt continued to set a blistering pace for the Eureka Loggers in a 9-0 win in girls soccer at Ferndale on Thursday.

Both players finished with a hat trick of goals and a hat trick of assists, following outstanding season debuts by each in a big win over South Fork earlier in the week.

Through two games, albeit against much smaller programs, Hernandes has seven goals and Ekholdt has six.

The Cats challenged the Loggers with their defense, but a talented Eureka team eventually found a way through.

“We played well,” Eureka head coach Tommy Learmouth said. “It’s difficult to play against a team that plays defense and counter attacks, but I thought we handled it well and were able to capitalize on what we’ve been working on.

“We capitalized on our opportunities for some easy finishes when we broke their line down.”

Angelina Conant also had a good game and added a goal and an assist in the win, while Emily Pesch and Ella Tollefson each had a goal to round out the scoring.

The Loggers were without a couple of key starters — goalie Lily Williamson and defender Maia Hales — but a couple of players stepped up in their absence.

Grace Nelson took over between the posts and kept a clean sheet, while Paige Rodgers took over from Hales as the team’s true center back and looked comfortable in the role.

“She was one of our vocal leaders,” Learmouth said of Rodgers.

Conant, Tollefson, Ekholdt and Hernandes each also played well in attack and impressed the coach with their movement off the ball and “being productive leaders.”

Next up, the Loggers play at St. Bernard’s on Tuesday.

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

  1. Confused on colors…as if Ferndale and South Fork got hamstrung with hand-me-down uniforms from Fortuna High School.

Ferndale was red/white…South Fork was yellow and blue… all three look alike now… smh…
