The Corsairs knew they were getting a star player when Arcata graduate Alia Prentiss committed to play soccer for them this year.
And Prentiss has not disappointed.
On Thursday, the 2022 Arcata graduate netted all five goals in College of the Redwoods’ 5-2 win at College of Marin.
“She does a lot of things for us,” head coach Taylor McMillin said of Prentiss. “She’s technical, she’s smart and she’s a goalscorer. She does a lot of things well. And she’s really leaning into the role of being a leader.”
The win lifts the Corsairs to 1-2 and was the first for McMillin, who is in her first year in charge of the team,
It also will give the CR women an early-season boost as they get set to open conference play in a couple of weeks.
“Each game we have played this preseason we’ve seen improvement individually and as a group,” McMillin said. “The goal of these preseason games are to see improvement tactically regardless of a win or a loss.
“Today we found a win and I couldn’t be more proud of these student-athletes.”
Prentiss wasn’t the only local player to impress in the win.

Former Ferndale Wildcat Gabriella Riley assisted on two of the goals and has started her sophomore season in style.
Freshman River Walkington also had an assist in the win.
The Corsairs will be back in action on Friday when they play at Chabot College at 11 a.m. to close out a two-game road trip.
“Each game we’re improving,” the head coach said. “The girls are stoked. They’re just excited and the energy is really good.”
