By Ray Hamill — It’s going to be a busy fall for local JV football, with eight of the nine H-DNL programs fielding teams.

And all eight were in action on the opening weekend last week.

It was an impressive start for several of them, with big wins for Eureka, Del Norte and Ferndale.

The Loggers shut out Arcata to go to 1-0, while the Warriors won 34-6 at Lower Lake and the Wildcats dominated Fall River on the way to a comprehensive 52-0 win.

The St. Bernard’s Crusaders also kicked off the new season with a victory, holding on late to defeat Hoopa 26-20.

The Fortuna Huskies also impressed with a strong showing against University Prep before ultimately falling by the narrowest of margins, 27-26.

Rounding out a busy opening weekend for the younger teams, the McKinleyville Panthers lost 27-0 to Kelseyville.

Six of the eight local JV teams will be back in action on Friday night, including one game here on the North Coast, with Fortuna hosting Arcata at 5 p.m.

Also in action on Friday night, St. Bernard’s travels to play Willits, Ferndale plays at Fort Bragg, Del Norte plays at Grants Pass and Eureka plays at Analy.

The McKinleyville JVs, meanwhile, will have a bye this weekend, as will Hoopa.

South Fork is the only H-DNL program not fielding a team this fall.

The McKinleyville JVs hosted Kelseyville in their season opener.
