By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers are preparing to defend the league championship they won in girls golf a year ago, and the 2023 Humboldt Sports High School Coach of the Year is hoping to guide them back to the summit.

Earlier this summer, longtime head coach Troy Ghisetti was named the coach of the year and he recently received his award, with Cami Cooper Claros of The Stove Doctors in McKinleyville on hand to present him with a plaque at Arcata High.

This year’s awards were sponsored by The Stove Doctors, Mendes Supply and DelReka Distributing.

Ghisetti earned the honor after guiding the Arcata girls to a league title last fall with another impressive team performance by the dominating Tigers.

He followed that by leading the Arcata boys to a memorable and thrilling North Coast Section championship in baseball in the spring.

And that was enough to separate Ghisetti from a huge field of worthy candidates and earn him the honor of the 2023 Humboldt Sports High School Coach of the Year.

Ghisetti is far from done and is showing no signs of slowing down despite notching his 400th career win in baseball in April of 2022.

The first order of business for 2023/24 is the upcoming girls golf season, which gets under way on Sept. 7 at Beau Pre in McKinleyville.
