By Ray Hamill — Two former Humboldt Crabs players were drafted this week in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Josh Mollerus, who played for the local club in 2019, was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round, while Owen Stevenson, who played for the Crabs in 2021, was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 19th round.
Mollerus, a right-handed pitcher, played collegiately at San Francisco and Oregon and was chosen 304th overall.
Stevenson, also a right-handed pitcher, played collegiately at San Francisco and Arizona State and was chosen 573rd overall.
And their success in the MLB Draft doesn’t surprise Crabs manager Robin Guiver, who remembers both players as big contributors on the local club.
“Both were good pitchers for us, and both are really good dudes,” Guiver said. “And I’m excited for them.”
The Crabs will open a three-game weekend series against the Bay Area Admirals (formerly the West Coast Kings) at the Arcata Ball Park on Friday night at 7 p.m.
