An historic season for the Fortuna Huskies came to an end on Saturday night, as the top seeds in the North Coast Section Division-4 bracket fell to Piedmont at Newburg Park.
The Huskies lost 5-2 to the No. 8 Highlanders, who scored three runs in the top of the seventh on the way to the victory.
The Fortuna boys closed out the season with a record of 13-8-1.
And they certainly left their mark on the school history books.
After clinching a first Big 5 championship for the program since 1975, the Huskies added a first-ever Charlie Lakin Tournament championship earlier this month.
The consistent Cody Collins closed out his senior season in much the same way he started, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk in the loss to Piedmont.
Cole Ayala also made some noise at the plate and was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk, while Rogan Gans was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Drew Franklin also walked twice.
The Highlanders will now advance to the NCS semifinals, where they will play No. 5 seed Justin-Siena on Wednesday night.
Fortuna’s Big 5 rivals Arcata and Del Norte will play in the other semifinal at Arcata High School.
