Humboldt County’s Josie Peterson won a CCAA conference championship in the women’s javelin for Chico State on Saturday.
Peterson, a St. Bernard’s graduate, won with a throw of 138’9”, just eight inches better than her teammate Ashley Brown in second.
The Wildcats sophomore only began competing in the javelin as a freshman at College of the Redwoods last year and enjoyed immediate success.
In her very first competition in the event she broke the CR school record with a throw of 123’10”.
She capped a brilliant debut season by placing second at the community college state championships in 2022, before transferring to Chico State this year.
Peterson graduated from St. Bernard’s in 2020 and was a multiple-sport athlete for the Crusaders, also starring in volleyball, basketball and softball.
The California Collegiate Athletic Association championships are taking place in San Marcos.
