CR women retain GVC championships, get set for NorCal meet

After clinching a second straight Golden Valley Conference championship, the College of the Redwoods women’s track and field team will head to Yuba College on Friday for the NorCal Trials.

The Corsairs placed first in eight events at last weekend’s conference meet, which was hosted by Butte College.

The CR women scored 123 points, well ahead of the host school in second with 103 points.

CR record setter Hannah Hartwell was a triple winner at the championship meet, taking first in the 800 meters, the 5K and the 10K, as well as placing second to teammate Chloe Allen in the 1500m.

The Corsairs’ depth in the middle distance races was evident with a one-two-three finish for the team in both the 800m and the 1500m.

Kristin Bonomini was second in the 1500m, with Allen in third, while Bonomini was third in the 800m.

Other CR winners included Eureka’s Sativa Younge in the 100m, Del Norte’s Tianna Thompson in the 200m, and Alexee Kline in both the discus and Hammer.

Thompson also placed second in the 100m, while Younge was fourth in the 200m.

Alyssa McCovey also scored some valuable team points with a second-place finish in the 400m hurdles, while Fortuna’s Maggie Stacy was second in the 3000m steeplechase.

Kallie Schoenbachler and Lilianna Hoban placed second and third, respectively, in the triple jump, while Allen, Stacy and Thompson came in second, third and fourth in the pole vault.

Kline rounded out a very good day for herself and her team with a second-place finish in the javelin and a third-place finish in the shot put.

The CR men, meanwhile, scored 78 points and finished second to champion Butte with 119 points.

Nathan Witte was a double winner for the Corsairs, taking first in both hurdles races, while Che Jimenez won the 400m and the Kyle Byrne was first home in the 800m.

Chance Hefter also enjoyed some success, placing first in the hammer and second in both the discus and the shot put.

Teammate Daegan McClary was second in the javelin, Dennis Petrus was second in the triple jump, Henry Lamb was second in the 3000m steeplechase, and Thomas Becannon was third in the 10K and the 1500m.

Gavin Albers also placed third for CR in the 400m.

After this weekend’s trials, the NorCal championships will take place next week, also at Yuba College.
