By Ray Hamill — It was a very good week for several H-DN golfers and one former Arcata High distance runner.
And that make them our athletes and team of the week, awards sponsored by College of the Redwoods athletics.
Despite having to battle wet, windy and cold conditions for much the spring, the Eureka Loggers enjoyed a very successful campaign in H-DN boys golf.
The Eureka boys capped a big local campaign by winning a fifth straight league championship in the final round of league action at Baywood Golf and Country on Monday.
The Loggers, who are our team of the week, feature a deep roster this season and comfortably outdistanced the rest of the field by winning five of the six rounds in league play.
We honor another golfer as one of our athletes of the week.
Spanish exchange student Esteban Cervantes is enjoying his time at St. Bernard’s and won a league title for the school with a big finish at Baywood.
The sophomore standout won four of the six rounds of league competition, including the final three rounds, as he rallied from a six-stroke deficit over the final two weeks.
And rounding out our honorees this week is a former Arcata Tiger who is enjoying a record-breaking season with the UC Santa Cruz women’s track and field team.
Riley Martel-Phillips, who dominated in H-DN cross country and track before graduating high school in 2019, set a new Banana Slugs record in the 5000 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific last weekend.
The Santa Cruz senior smashed the old record by more than 10 seconds with a time of 17 minutes, 17.72 seconds.

The poor spring weather didn’t dampen Cervantes’ spirits as he rallied late in the season to win the league title by two strokes, with Arcata’s Mason Alway finishing second.
Cervantes shot an 81 in rough conditions in the final round to cap a season he won’t easily forget.

After coming close to setting a new school record in the 5000m late last month, Martel-Phillips made no mistake at Azusa this past week.
As a Tiger, she was a three-time H-DN cross country champion and a three-time league champion in the 1600m, and she has continued to impress and improve at the college level.
Martel-Phillips broke the old school record, which had stood since 2009, by 10.5 seconds and broke her old PR by 11.46 seconds.
It leaves the Slugs senior with the top time this season in the West Region and the 13th best mark in the entire country.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Eureka Boys Golf
The Eureka boys showcased their depth by placing four golfers in the top 10 in the final H-DN standings, including three who received all-league recognition.
Under the guidance of head coach Jimmy Rodgers, the Eureka boys will now advance to the North Coast Section tournament in early May.
Talon Vigil led the Loggers in the regular season and placed third overall, followed by teammates Julian Goodman in fourth, Andrew Stewart in seventh and Jerome Lyon in 10th.
Wyatt Zerlang and Jordan Urban each also played a role for the team this spring, finishing 17th and 26th overall, respectively, with Nate Hill and Larry Jimenez rounding out the team.
