The St. Bernard’s Crusaders split a baseball doubleheader on the road on Saturday, beating Trinity 7-0 before losing to University Prep 3-1.

Good pitching was the story of the day, with Tyler Dimmick, Mateo Gutierrez and Michael Manzi all throwing well.

Dimmick pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the opener, while striking out 11 and giving up one walk.

Gutierrez followed that with 3.1 strong innings against the Panthers in game two, allowing two unearned runs and striking out three.

Manzi capped a big day for the SB pitchers, allowing one unearned run in 2.2 innings in relief and striking out three.

Manzi also had an impact at the plate in game one, finishing 1-for-3 with a double and stealing a pair of bases, while Tyler Maples also made some noise at the plate and was 2-for-4 with a double.

The Crusaders bats were held to just three hits against University, one each by Gutierrez, Tyson Meyer and TC Rinker.

Tyler Hinrichs also walked twice in the loss and scored the team’s only run on a successful Michael Fugate squeeze bunt.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Crusaders who are now 11-7.

St. Bernard’s returns to league play next Saturday in a doubleheader at South Fork.
