All tied atop the standings as Cervantes makes his move

The race for the 2023 H-DN boys golf championship will go down to the final day of action.

St, Bernard’s Esteban Cervantes made a big move on Thursday, matching his season-best round with a 77 at Del Norte and winning for the third time in five rounds of league play.

Cervantes’ big round closed a six-stroke gap at the top of the season standings and leaves him tied for the league lead with Arcata’s Mason Alway with one round of action remaining.

Jack Kramer was second best on the day with a round of 80, giving St. Bernard’s the top two scores in tough conditions again.

As a team, the Crusaders had their best finish of the season and placed second to Eureka, with the Loggers all but securing the team championship with another big performance.

All six Eureka golfers shot a 92 or better to move the Loggers into an unassailable 47-stroke lead in the season standings.

Eureka’s Talon Vigil and Julian Goodman and Del Norte’s Kai Russell each tied for third on the day with an 82, with four golfers one stroke further back, including Eureka’s Andrew Stewart and Jerome Lyon.

Alway and McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner also had rounds of 83, while South Fork’s Trevor Hunt continuing his impressive spring with a round of 88.

Arcata’s Beck Pederson also shot an 88, with Eureka’s Jordan Urban and Arcata’s Zayne Morris-Slattery next best with rounds of 89.

Dawson McWhorter led Fortuna with a 90, while Del Norte’s Blake Larson also shot a 90.

The final round of league play will take place at Baywood on April 17.
