It was a quick turnaround for the Humboldt Composite Mountain Bike Team (HCMTB), which is getting well used to a lot of travel this spring.

Just one week after their season-opening event at Fort Ord near Monterey, the local high school racers traveled inland to the Granite Bay Recreation Area near Sacramento for the second event of the season this past weekend.

And the HCMTB enjoyed yet another strong showing, especially Hailey Kroeker, who led the local contingent for the second straight week.

The impressive Kroeker placed fifth in the varsity girls race, an improvement of four spots from the season-opening event.

It was the team’s first podium finish of the new season.

Teammate Maggie Odell also competed in the girls varsity race and placed 10th.

The weekend event was originally scheduled to take place in Eureka, but the venue had to be switched to the Lake Folsom area after all the recent rain.

Also impressing for the HCMTB was Arcata freshman Dinon McIntosh, who placed 11th out of 62 riders in the boys freshmen race after barely avoiding an early pile-up.

In the JV boys race, meanwhile, Humboldt’s Kai Lamb (29th), Nico Costanzo (39th), and Aaron Shapiro (43rd) all competed well in a large field of 73 riders.

Another Arcata rider, Sierra Paliaga, also enjoyed a strong showing in the JV girls race, placing 21st out of 46 riders, as did HCMTB freshman Evelyn Seeman, who finished 15th in the girls freshmen race in just her second ever race.

Sophomore Ranger Code and Sasha Love both also made the trip to compete in the boys and girls JV races.

The HCMTB riders will be back in action in two weeks as they continue their spring season.
