Former Eureka Logger Bella Vigil and her Butte College teammates moved within two wins of a state championship in women’s basketball on Friday evening.

The Roadrunners tipped off the Elite Eight state tournament with a comfortable 72-48 win over Cypress at West Hills College Leemore.

The win was the 12th straight for Vigil and the Butte women, who improved to 27-3 on the season.

Vigil is a sophomore guard and team captain for the Roadrunners this season, her second with the team.

The 2021 Eureka High graduate continues to play a role off the bench.

After a close first quarter, the Roadrunners opened up a nine-point lead going into the halftime break and would pull away in the second half, outscoring Cypress 22-9 in the fourth quarter.

Vigil and her teammates will play in the state semifinal on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against either Palomar or Sequoias.

The game will be streamed live on the CCCAA website here …

In two earlier quarterfinals on Friday, Santa Rosa defeated Mt. San Antonio 65-48 and Orange Coast beat Sierra 73-56.
