Former Fortuna Husky Adam Medeiros closed out an impressive season on the collegiate wrestling mats recently with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional Tournament.
The 2019 Fortuna graduate, who competes for Division-III Heidelberg University in Ohio, had a record of 23-7 this winter, including winning four of his six matches at the regional tournament.
Competing at 184 pounds, Medeiros won his first two matches with a pin and was 3-0 on the opening day at the tournament, which was held in late February at Case Western Reserve University.
After losing a close 3-2 decision to Wabash’s Charles Back in the quarterfinal, Medeiros would bounce back to place fifth.
Medeiros, who was the highest placer of any of the Heidelberg wrestlers, is a senior who has the option of competing again next year after a shortened sophomore season in the midst of the pandemic.
The Fortuna graduate also was one of two Heidelberg wrestlers to earn All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors this year.
He was 5-1 in OAC matches, including two victories by pin and a major decision, as well as a victory wrestling up at 197.
“Adam has proven himself to be an integral part of our team, on and off the mats,” Heidelberg head coach Tony Patrizi said on the university website. “Receiving his first all-conference honor is a great highlight of his senior year.”
Two of Medeiros’ former Fortuna teammates also enjoyed some success on the collegiate mats this winter.
Competing for Southwestern Oregon Community College, Micaiah Montalbin placed fifth at pair of tournaments and is in line to start for his team at 184 next season.
At Southern Oregon, meanwhile, Jason Bernstein won 12 matches for the Raiders at 285 pounds.
