Corsairs sweep doubleheader with back-to-back walk-off wins

The Corsairs enjoyed a successful home-opening doubleheader in baseball on Saturday, posting back-to-back walk-off victories at Bomber Field.

A scheduled three-game weekend series against De Anza was limited to a Saturday doubleheader because of a Friday rainout, but the the College of the Redwoods men took both games, winning 15-14 and 8-7.

Parker Rodgers led the way offensively in game one and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Gavyn Dansby was 3-for-5 with a double and Jeran Ford finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Grant Lasserre got the win on the mound in relief, with Mateo Hamm also pitching well in relief.

Redwoods overcame a late deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

“We were sloppy defensively and made too many errors, but found a way to battle back and continue to compete even when things got tough,” head coach Andrew Aiello said.

In game two, the Corsairs trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth but scored seven late runs, including three in the bottom of the seventh, to secure the come-from-behind victory.

Fortuna’s Joey Quen got the win on the mound in relief.

“He kept us in it and close enough to find a way at the end,” Aiello said of Quen.

At the plate, Cam Witte finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Dante Strazzullo was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Lasserre was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

“We struggled to have good contact and quality at-bats early,” Aiello said. “But the same thing (as in game one), we continued to fight and claw as the game went on and showed some resiliency.”

With the two wins, the Corsairs improved to 3-5 on the season.

Aiello admits there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“We have to clean up the errors and any mental mistakes in order for us to continue to be in games late,” he said. “Our focus now, as it always will be, is just about us, how we are preparing every day, our habits, and the little things that help to create success.”

Next up, the Corsairs open a three-game series with a doubleheader against Napa on Thursday at noon at Bomber Field in Eureka.
