The Huskies got back to winning ways in boys basketball on Thursday night, ending a two-game losing skid with a 51-49 over Eureka in a closely-contested game at Fortuna.

The Fortuna boys came storming out of the gates and held the Loggers to just five points in the opening quarter on the way to opening up a 12-point lead.

The visitors, however, responded with a huge second quarter, putting up 22 points to carry a two-point lead into the second half.

There was little to separate the two teams in a back-and-forth second half, but the Huskies did just enough to sneak the win and improved to 3-4 in the Big 5 and 15-9 overall.

Alfonso Medina led a balanced offensive performance by Fortuna and scored a team-high 12 points, while also dishing out 11 assists for a double-double and adding four steals.

Teammate Russell Pascascio added 10 points and six boards, while Cody Collins finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Donald Bickle also had seven points in the win, Jake Houseworth six and Kallen Barrote and Peyton Hart four apiece.

The victory leaves the Huskies two wins ahead of Eureka (1-5) and Del Norte (1-4) in the league standings and leaves them on the verge of securing the third and final league spot for the Dick Niclai Tournament.

No stats were available for Eureka, which dropped to 9-12 overall.

Next up, on Saturday, the Huskies travel to Kelseyville and Eureka will host St. Bernard’s.
