The Lumberjacks remain among the conference leaders in men’s basketball despite dropping their first game of the new year on Sunday.

The Cal Poly men’s and women’s teams traveled to Sonoma State for a New Year’s Day doubleheader against the Seawolves, but lost both games.

The Humboldt men lost 65-53 and are now 4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 6-6 overall, while the women fell 74-65 and are now 3-3 and 5-5.

The losses ended a two-game winning streak for each team.

The Humboldt men, however, remain in a tie for third in the conference standings, trailing only Cal State San Bernardino, which has played far fewer games and is 3-0 in the CCAA, as well as Cal State San Marcos, which is 5-1.

Sonoma State is also now 4-2 in the CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona is also in the mix and currently in fifth with a 3-2 record.

The Humboldt women, meanwhile, are in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings after Sunday’s loss, along with Cal State Los Angeles and Sonoma State.

Both Humboldt teams will try to bounce back when they travel to play Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night, with the women playing at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30.

The Jacks will also play at San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon, before returning to Arcata to host Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State San Marcos in their first home games of the new year at Lumberjack Arena next week.
