File photo – The Crusaders lost by one point on Wednesday.

The McKinleyville Panthers closed out the Sac Adventist tournament with a victory in the third-place game on Wednesday, while the St. Bernard’s Crusaders lost a close battle in their opener at the Walnut Creek tournament.

The Panthers got the better of the host school at their tournament by a score of 71-63, while the shorthanded Crusaders fell 69-68 to AIMS.

Jack Clancy scored a team-best 22 points for the Mack boys, who improved to 10-3 and closed out the tournament 2-1.

Clancy was of two Panthers players named to the all-tournament team, along with Cody Whitmer, who capped three strong days in tournament play with 22 points in the win.

Cameron Hooven also had a good game and finished with 13 points, while Payton Harbin continues to play an ever-growing role and chipped in 11 points.

Earlier in tournament action, the Panthers defeated Colfax 57-43 before losing to El Dorado 69-38.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, had their scheduled tournament opener canceled on Tuesday after the earthquake and had just six players suit up for their game against AIMS.

St. Bernard’s led by two with under two seconds remaining, but the Golden Eagles won the game on a three-quarter court shot.

“We did everything we needed to do to win the game, but luck is part of the game,” St. Bernard’s head coach Issac Gildea said. “I am proud of my guys tonight. We played great.”

The ever-dangerous Aaiden Burris scored 29 points in the loss, while Seth Dyer finished with 16 points and Liam Dyer finished with 11.

With the loss, the SB boys dropped to 5-6 on the season.

Owen Shanahan added eight points, while Tyler Dimmick finished with four points.

The Crusaders continue tournament play against Mendocino on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m.

  1. Every single time St. Bernard’s loses, they’re always “short-handed”. Give the other team some credit and stop making excuses
