The Eureka Loggers came storming out of the gates and never looked back on their way to a 53-23 win over McKinleyville in the Panther Classic championship game on Saturday.

Moriah Bowles led a balanced Eureka attack with 15 points, while teammate Kaitlin Giacone finished with 13 points.

“Their size and athleticism was tough for us to counter,” McKinleyville head coach Jacob Cheek said. “Hats off to them, it was a good test for us and good learning experience going forward. We’ll get better moving forward.”

With the win, which was their fourth straight, the Loggers improved to 10-2 on the season.

Eureka’s Amaya Gee also had a good game and finished with 12 points, while Aniah Gaither added 10 points.

No individual stats were immediately available for the Mack girls, who dropped to 8-2.

The Panthers advanced to the championship game after wins over St. Bernard’s on Wednesday and Yreka on Friday night.

The Loggers, meanwhile, also topped Fortuna and Weed in earlier tournament action.

St. Bernard’s, meanwhile, also won on Saturday, defeating Fortuna 57-43 in the third-place game at the Panther Classic.

Madelyn Shanahan led the SB girls with 23 points, while Laila Florvilus finished with 16 points and Aliyah Vigil and Amaiyah Her each chipped in six points.

“The game was competitive for the opening half, before the Little 4 school began to take control.

“St. Bernard’s did a great adjusting at halftime,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said. “We did not match their energy and intensity and the game got away from us.”

The consistent Grace Scilacci scored a team-high 13 points for the Huskies, while teammate Haylee Youkey finished with 10 points.

Mataya Sherman added four points for SB, while Shaya Robinson had two points.

The Crusaders are now 8-1, while the Huskies are 5-7.
