The Ferndale girls held their nerve late in Saturday’s championship game at the Trinity Holiday Classic in basketball, beating the host school 50-47 in an exciting championship showdown.

With the lead changing hands several times in the fourth quarter, the Ferndale girls hit 7 of 10 free throw attempts in the final couple of minutes to secure the victory.

“It was definitely a team effort tonight as we battled against a much taller roster,” head coach Terra Albee said. “The girls played their hearts out, especially on defense.

“I’m so proud of this team and the effort they put into every game this weekend. All their hard work paid off.”

Emily Chavez capped a big week on the court with a strong defensive performance and was named tournament MVP.

She was also  the team’s high scorer in two of the three tournament games.

Reaghan Langer also was instrumental in the win and scored a team-high 19 points, while Carly Carmesin finished with 11 points and Kyla Albee had 10.

Langer and Kyla Albee both played some outstanding defense and were named all-tournament.

Clara Christiansen and Clara Albee each added four points in the win, while Chavez had two points.

Langer, Kyla Albee and Clara Albee all made some key free throws down the stretch to help keep Trinity at bay.

With the win, the Cats improved to 4-1.

This was their first tournament of the season.

Next up, they play at Anderson Valley on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
