CR men get impressive win at Contra Costa

The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team  enjoyed one of its most impressive wins of the season at Contra Costa on Tuesday night, getting the better of the Comets 81-64.

The high-flying Corsairs actually dropped two spots in the state rankings this week in the most recent coaches poll and are now No. 16, but they continued to impress on Tuesday on their way to improving to 13-1.

“That was a resounding statement against a playoff caliber team on the road,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “Not an easy task doing what our guys did tonight.

“We came to compete and we came to be the aggressor.”

Jett Cheong scored a team-high 23 points in the win, while teammate Trey Neff added 21.

“Jett got us off to a great start tonight tonally,” Bisio said. “He opened the game with a couple of 3s and the manner in which he shot them gave us all confidence.

Jon Nchekwube also continued to impress and finished with 19 points, while Kai Purcell added 12 points as the recent Arcata graduate continues to play a pivotal role on this year’s team.

“Defensively we did a great job of eliminating dribble penetration,” the head coach said. “It’s not easy to do that against a team which is by far the most explosive and athletic team we’ve played so far this year.”

Next up, the Corsairs will play at Southwestern Oregon in Coos Bay on Friday night at 7.
