Two Big 5 teams were involved in a couple of thrilling finishes on Saturday, with mixed fortunes.
At the Grass Pass tournament, Eureka edged Crater thanks to a late Claire Maples 3-pointer.
The clutch Loggers won the game 40-39.
The host school scored the winning basket with just six seconds remaining to hand the Del Norte girls their first loss of the season.
Also in action on Saturday, the St. Bernard’s Crusaders capped a big few days at the Cloverdale tournament with a comfortable 64-48 win over Windsor in the championship game.
Madelyn Shanahan was named tournament MVP after another strong showing in the championship game, while teammate Laila Florvilus was also named to the all-tournament team.
St. Bernard’s is now 3-0 on the season.
Eureka 40, Crater 39
Maples hit a game-winning 3-pointer with just 20 seconds remaining, as the Loggers pulled out a hard-fought one-point win over Crater to close out the Grants Pass tournament.
The win was the second straight in tournament play for the Eureka girls, who responded well from a defeat to the host school on Thursday night with back-to-back victories over Southridge and Crater.
Maples stepped up big over the weekend and scored a team-high 11 points in Saturday’s win, including the dramatic late winner from the top of the key.
After that, the Eureka defense held firm to help seal the win.
Kaitlin Giacone capped a big weekend with nine points in the win, while Kira Morris played a lot of minutes over the three days and brought her trademark intensity to the games.
“I’m proud of the kids and the way they played,’ Napoleon said.
The Loggers are now 5-1 on the season and will play next at the Maria Carrillo tournament, which tips off on Thursday.
Yreka 52, Del Norte 50
The home team scored the winning basket with just six seconds remaining in what was an exciting and close battle throughout.
No Del Norte stats were immediately available.
With the loss, the Warriors dropped to 3-1.
