The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season at the Mendocino College tournament on Friday.

The Corsairs fell 83-68 to Los Medanos and are now 7-1 on the season.

Jon Nchekwube scored 17 points in the loss, while Trey Neff added 13 and former Arcata Tiger Kai Purcell chipped in 12 points for his best offensive outing of the young season.

“Los Medanos’ style of play is a tough matchup for us,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “Their approach is very difficult to deal with.

The Corsairs trailed 43-41 at halftime.

“We felt a little rundown in the second half,” Bisio added. “Their constant pressure fatigued us mentally and physically.”

The game was the eighth in 14 days for the busy Corsairs.

CR will close out tournament play against Lassen at 3 p.m. on Saturday, before returning home to face Merced on Monday at 2 p.m. to cap  a hectic spell of 10 games in 17 days.
