ATHLETES AND TEAMS OF THE WEEK — Tigers back on top; seniors closing out strong

By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers are champions of the H-DNL in boys soccer for the first time in six years after completing an undefeated league campaign last week.

And that makes them one of our Teams of the Week, an award sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

The Tigers, who will open the North Coast Section playoffs on Saturday, closed out the H-DNL with a record of 10-0-2, with Eureka the only team to take any points from them.

Joining them as co-Team of the Week is the College of the Redwoods women’s cross country team, which is enjoying an outstanding fall.

With sophomore standout Hannah Hartwell leading the way, the Corsairs were crowned Golden Valley Conference champions last week and they will try to add a NorCal title when they host the prestigious meet in Fortuna on Saturday.

Our Athletes of the Week, meanwhile, are a pair of hard-working seniors who have been as consistent as any of their peers this fall and appear to be getting stronger as their seasons progress.

Eureka’s Charlotte Leonard won for the first time this season in the final regular-season H-DNL cross country race at Del Norte last week and will carry plenty of momentum into Saturday’s league championships at the Arcata Marsh.

Del Norte’s Bryson Price also is enjoying an outstanding season for the Warriors on the football field and was instrumental in helping his team to a 48-12 win at St. Bernard’s this past weekend.

Charlotte Leonard

Eureka Senior, Cross Country

Leonard has been a consistent frontrunner in the H-DNL all season, placing second in all four of her races before traveling to Del Norte last week.

And she saved the best for last, outpacing the field by almost 30 seconds on her way to victory.

The Logger standout will be one of the favorites to win at this weekend’s league championships.

Bryson Price (50)

Bryson Price

Del Norte Football, Senior

Price has been about as consistent as anyone in the H-DNL this year and continues to play a pivotal role on the defensive line for the league champion Warriors.

In addition to his outstanding day on the line against the Crusaders, the senior defensive end also blocked a punt on special teams that teammate Kai Russell returned for a TD.

Price and the Warriors will close out the regular season at home to Fortuna on Friday night.

Arcata Boys Soccer

The Tigers had high expectations coming into this season and they have not disappointed.

Under head coach John Davidson, they went undefeated in league play on the way to their first championship since 2015 and their first outright title since 2012.

And they’re not done yet.

After clinching the league title the Arcata boys will now turn their attention toward securing a first-ever NCS title, with the No. 2 seeds in Division 1 kicking off the postseason on Saturday afternoon.

College of the Redwoods Women’s Cross Country

The CR women swept the top-three places at last weekend’s GVC championships at Butte College.

Hartwell took first place, as expected, with teammates Kristin Bonomini in second and Maggie Stacy in third.

Chloe Allen was seventh overall and Deborah Wells eighth, giving the Corsairs five of the top eight finishers and showcasing their team depth.

Head coach Reed Elmore has done an outstanding job building the CR cross country and track and field programs in recent years, and this is the latest achievement in what has been a very impressive calendar year for the Corsairs.
