The Crusaders saw an impressive season on the volleyball court end on Saturday night, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

Playing on the road against the top team in the North Coast Section Division-6 playoff bracket, the St. Bernard’s girls lost 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 at San Francisco Waldorf.

It was a gutsy performance against a heavily-favored opponent.

“We were in every game play by play,” said head coach Wendy Joyner, who added of her players, “They played really hard to close out the season.”

Junior standout Madelyn Shanahan continued to impress and was clearly fired up for the occasion, along with her teammates.

Joyner described Shanahan’s performance as her best of the season.

“She came out on fire,” the coach said. “And they had no way to stop her. She was amazing tonight. She was at real MVP form.”

Shanahan finished with 18 kills, while senior teammate Kodi Meyer also continued to shine and had an impress 25 assists.

The team had problems serving, however, with 11 missed serves.

“Our downfall was our serving,” the head coach added.

The loss ends another successful season for the team, which was 8-0 in league play and Little 5 champions.

The Crusaders defeated Holy Names in straight sets in their playoff opener last week.
