H-DNL teams’ playoff fate to be determined on Sunday

Ray Hamill/humboldtSports.com – The Eureka girls will find out on Sunday if they made the NCS playoffs.

By Ray Hamill — With the regular season completed, the North Coast Section volleyball playoffs will get under way next week.

Several local teams are expected to qualify, including league champs Del Norte and St. Bernard’s, each of whom will host their opening game.

Other teams, however, must wait to see if they make the field.

The seedings for all six divisions will be announced along with the 16-team brackets on Sunday, with the games beginning on Tuesday.

H-DNL teams could feature in as many as four different brackets, with two or three teams expected to make the Division-4 field.

For comparison sake, according to MaxPreps, Del Norte is currently ranked No. 3 in Division 4, trailing only Marin Academy and Saint Mary’s.

In the same division, Arcata is No. 9 and Fortuna No. 15.

Eureka, meanwhile, is in Division 3 and is on the bubble as the No. 16 ranked team.

It’s important to remember that the MaxPrep rankings do not decide the seeds, but are useful in gauging where a team stands.

The H-DNL will also feature in the smaller school brackets.

In Division 6, the Crusaders are ranked No. 9, according to MaxPreps, while Ferndale is No. 13.

Hoopa also appears to be on the bubble in Division 5, where the Warriors are ranked No. 17.

The NCS playoffs will run for the next two weeks, with championship games taking place on Nov. 5.
