What’s next for the H-DNL teams in football

Ray Hamill/ – The Hoopa Warriors and St. Bernard’s Crusaders will both be in action this weekend.

By Ray Hamill — There are two more key Little 4 games on tap this weekend, with six of the nine H-DNL varsity teams in action on Friday and Saturday.

First up, on Friday night, the McKinleyville Panthers will try to keep their impressive start to league play going when they host the Arcata Tigers in a rivalry game under the lights.

This could be the most intriguing local game of the weekend, with both teams coming off impressive wins and eager to keep moving in the right direction.

The Panthers are 2-0 in league play and sit atop the league standings, but the Tigers got their season back on track with a much-needed 26-16 win at Ferndale on Saturday and will carry plenty of confidence into the big showdown.

McKinleyville is 3-3 overall, while the Tigers are 1-1 in the L4 and 2-4 overall.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Also in the Little 4 on Friday night, the Hoopa Warriors will host the Ferndale Wildcats, also at 7:30 p.m.

The Warriors are 1-1 in league play (4-2 overall) and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing four-point loss at McKinleyville, while the Cats are 0-2 (2-4 overall) and still looking for their first league win.

The Big 4, meanwhile, kicks off next week and three of the league teams — Del Norte (5-1), Eureka (3-2) and Fortuna (3-4) — will enjoy a bye this weekend as they prepare for a big three-week stretch.

St. Bernard’s (3-3) will be the lone B4 team in action this weekend, with the Crusaders traveling to play St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

This will be a tough matchup for the Crusaders.

They lost 33-7 in week one to the Mustangs, who are 6-0 and have comfortably won all their games by sizable margins.

Rounding out the H-DNL contingent in action this weekend, the South Fork Cubs (3-3) will host Cornerstone Christian (3-2) in an eight-man NCL-II game on Friday night at 6 p.m.

The Cubs are 1-1 in league play after losing 38-8 at Branson last week, while the Cougars are 0-2.
