The Eureka Loggers responded to some weekend adversity in style on Wednesday night, scoring four first-half goals in a 4-0 win over Fortuna.
On Saturday, the McKinleyville Panthers frustrated the league leaders with their defense and it took a last-gasp goal by Lorena Hernandes to sneak the win.
On Wednesday, however, the Eureka girls ran out to a comfortable victory and improved to 5-0 in the Big 4.
“It was definitely a warning shot,” head coach Tommy Learmouth said of the weekend game. “And we came out cool, calm and collected tonight.
“Every player was getting to their point and knowing what to do, and it led to a lot of success.”
The in-form Hernandes, who is one of this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week, scored two more goals in the win.
The striker is enjoying a big sophomore campaign after also scoring twice on Saturday.
At the back, Maia Hales and Paige Rodgers continued to set the tone for the team in front of goalie Claire Maples, as the Loggers posted an eighth shutout in their last nine games.
“They anchor our back line day in and day out,” Learmouth said of the defensive partnership.
Midfielder Angelina Conant also continued to impress.
“Angelina was all over the place tonight, helping out offensively and defensively,” Learmouth said. “But really, I’ve got a shoutout to the whole team.”
Saedra Joseph and Ella Tollefson each also scored in the win, and each also had an assist, as did Grace Nelson.
On Saturday, the Loggers will play Arcata and Fortuna plays McKinleyville.
