The College of the Redwoods women split a pair of non-conference games in volleyball at De Anza on Friday, getting the better of Skyline in three sets before falling to the host team in three sets.

The Corsairs comfortably took the opener but a roster of mostly freshmen was unable to match the experience of De Anza later in the day.

“You could see the experience difference on the court,” CR head coach Petra Lorenzi said. “Our girls did a good job though.”

Former Arcata Tiger Abby Costello-Anderson impressed in the opener and finished with as game-high 10 kills, as the Corsairs won 25-6, 25-8, 25-9.

Zoe Zerlang and Mia Holcomb each added five kills, while Mandy Yoshizawa finished with five service aces and Perla Ceballos had four.

The Corsairs followed that with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 loss to De Anza.

Despite the loss, outside hitters Costello-Anderson and Ella Day impressed with their ball placement, while middle blockers Lily LaRue and Zoe Zerlang were both “aggressive at the net and executed,” according to the coach.

“They made a huge difference for our teams defensively and offensively,” Lorenzi said.

Heavenn Fults also had a good game defensively and finished with 13 digs in the loss.

“She really stepped up,” Lorenzi.

The Corsairs, who are now 4-7, will play at South West Oregon on Wednesday.
