ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Impressive performances in tennis, football and cross country

By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors have been an impressive group on the football field this year, but one player has been leading the way and setting the tone for the team on both sides of the ball.

Running back and linebacker Giancarlo Desolenni is enjoying an outstanding senior season so far, and has been the heart and soul of the team through the opening four games.

And that gets him the nod for one of this week’s Athletes of the Week, an award sponsored by College of the Redwoods.

Maybe Desolenni will follow in the footsteps of several or his former Del Norte teammates who have been outstanding this fall at the collegiate level.

Whatever Desolenni’s plans are, one thing is certain: With the way he’s playing for the Warriors right now, he will have plenty of offers.

On Friday night, the senior team leader had another big game in leading Del Norte to a comprehensive 55-7 win over West Valley.

He wasn’t the only local athlete to shine this past week.

Just a few months after her record-breaking spring in track and field, CR’s Hannah Hartwell got the cross country season off to an outstanding start with a dominating performance at the NorCal Preview meet at Fortuna on Saturday.

The Corsairs star ran away from the competition — literally — on her way to victory and outpaced some of the best runners in the state by more than a minute.

Our Team of the Week, meanwhile, goes to one of the most dominating local high school sports dynasties in recent years, which is showing no signs of slowing down.

The Arcata girls tennis team is off to another strong start this fall and improved to 4-0 in H-DNL play with a 6-3 victory over Northcoast Prep on Tuesday.

Giancarlo Desolenni

Del Norte Football, Senior

Desolenni scored three touchdowns in Friday’s win over West Valley, scoring on runs of 18, 47 and 23 yards, two of them coming in the first quarter.

The standout senior, who was equally impressive on defense, finished with 136 yards rushing on just six carries.

“He’s the ultimate warrior,” Del Norte head coach Nick White said. “Defensively and offensively, he is definitely one of the top players in our area.”

Hannah Hartwell

College of the Redwoods Cross County, Sophomore

The former Cal Poly Humboldt runner had an outstanding debut in cross country for CR on Saturday and placed first at the NorCal Preview meet, which the Corsairs hosted in Fortuna.

Hartwell finished the hilly 5K course in a time of 19 minutes, 51 seconds, 63 seconds better than second place.

Her big performance also helped the CR women to the team victory.

Arcata Girls Tennis

The Tigers have started this season in much the same way they finished up last year, by dominating the rest of the H-DNL.

The Arcata girls had a big win over rivals NorthCoast Prep on Tuesday, wining four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles for a 6-3 victory.
