Sundberg leads the field again at Fortuna; Tigers continue to dominate

McKinleyville’s Sofie Sundberg solidified her lead in H-DNL girls golf on Monday after taking her second straight victory.

The Panthers senior, who is the defending league champion, shot a 94 to lead the field in the third round of league play at the Redwood Empire Golf Course in Fortuna.

The score equalled her best round of the new season and she now holds a six-stroke lead over Arcata’s Morgan Ford in the season standings.

Ford had the second best round for the second straight week and is the only other golfer to have won a round this fall.

The Arcata senior shot a 96, her best round of the season so far.

Her Tigers teammate, Iris Conrad, had the third-best round of the day after shooting a 98 and was the only other golfer to break 100.

Arcata’s Sagen Sarchett also continued to impress with a 100, which was good enough for fourth overall.

Eureka’s Ilaeh Brannon and Arcata’s Avery Meadows each shot a 102 to tie for fifth, with Eureka’s Mia Lopez (108), Arcata’s Amaya Urquidez (110), St. Bernard’s Estella Monaghan (114) and Hannah Finck (115) rounding out the top 10.

Four different schools were represented in the top 10, including the league-leading Arcata girls, who placed four in the top five and five in the top eight.

League play continues with the next round of action scheduled for Eureka.
