Three Cal Poly Humboldt teams officially kicked off the new college sports year on Thursday, with mixed results.

The men’s soccer team tied Northwest Nazerne 2-2 at College Creek Field on campus, battling back from an early deficit.

Second-half goals by Devin Hauenstein and Juan Perez gave the Jacks a 2-1 lead, before the visiting Nighthawks scored late to secure a tie.

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team, meanwhile, fell 1-0 at Fresno Pacific.

The Jacks out-shot the home team 4-3 and showcased some offensive balance with four different players — Erin Mohr, Frida Duran Arellano, Jysabella Tolentino and Julia Humphreys — each recording a shot on goal.

The Cal Poly women fared better in the volleyball season opener, defeating Western New Mexico in four sets at the Green Chile Classic in Silver City.

New head coach Angela Spoja got her Lumberjacks career off to a winning start, with the Cal Poly women winning 15-25, 25-18, 25-21, 29-27.

Lindsey McLaughlin had nine kills for Cal Poly, while teammate Amanda Klotz added seven kills and nine digs.

Nicole Yakushenok had a game-high 19 assists.
