One of the most popular events at the Ferndale Races will return this year, with “Ladies Hat Day” set for the second Saturday.

The horse races get under way this week and will feature six days of racing, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday programs on back-to-back weekends.

And the 10th annual “Ladies Hat Day” is once again expected to be a big draw on an afternoon that has traditionally attracted the biggest crowds at the Humboldt Fair.

Entrants will compete for cash and other prizes in various “Hatagories,” with a special parade of the hats in front the grandstand scheduled between two of the early races on that day’s program.

Winners will be announced after the sixth race, with the grand prize winner receiving a $1,000 cash voucher, dinner for two at the Double D Restaurant in Fortuna, a $150 gift certificate at Pure Makeup, flowers and a special trophy.

The runner-up will receive a $250 cash voucher, dinner for two at the Sea Grill Restaurant in Eureka and a bottle of champagne.

There will also be three honorable mention prizes.

A $100 cash voucher will also be awarded to winners in each of the following categories — Best Racing Theme, Most Glamorous, Best Couple or Group, Funniest or Most Outrageous, and Best Youth Up To 12 Years Old.

Ladies can register for the contest at a booth just inside the racing gate.

Rex Bohn will again serve as master of ceremonies, with The Burleyman providing the music in between races.
