VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — Gomes, Panthers deliver on another big day for H-DNL softball

By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL will play for four of the 12 combined baseball and softball NCS championships on Friday night, and all four of those games will be played here in Humboldt County.

On Wednesday, the McKinleyville girls defeated Cardinal Newman 2-1 in dramatic fashion, joining the Eureka and Hoopa girls and the St. Bernard’s boys in this weekend’s championship round.

The Panthers left it late — again — but found a way to overturn a one-run deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Check out the seventh-inning highlights above, with big hits from seniors Allie Egbert and Raina Ausburn and junior Taya Gomes, who was outstanding on both sides of the plate and finished with three of her team’s seven hits.

Freshman Bailee Box also was clutch, reaching base with a two-out single, stealing her way to second and then scoring on Ausburn’s walk-off base hit.
