Cubs go down battling, as longtime battery plays final game together

A productive South Fork partnership played its final game on Saturday, as the Cubs fell 2-0 at St. Helena in the North Coast Section Division-5 softball playoffs.

But the duo went down fighting with one of their best performances of the season.

Junior pitcher Summer Contreras threw a two-hitter in the road loss against the No. 2 seeds in the bracket, combining well with senior catcher Lily Carr, who had a big game behind the plate in her final high school outing.

The two players have been playing together as pitcher and catcher since they were 9 and 10 years old.

Contreras, who is a multi-sport standout, struck out nine in this pitchers’ duel, while Shawnessy Conway-O’Neill had a base hit for the Cubs.

Carr is one of five seniors on this year’s team, along with Olivia Ward, Micheala McMahan, Lyndsee Brewer and Merrissa Beebe.

Carr, Brewer and Ward all won an NCS title as freshmen.
